EARTH CAROLS FOR THE SOLSTICE SEASON

Nature-based or Pagan words to Traditional Carols for the Yule Season.

(All words are either by Robin NiDana or others in the larger Pagan community.   Credit has been given where known, if you know of credit that should be given, please let me know. All words by Robin NiDana are *explicitly* entered into the public domain, with the request that credit be given.

These Carols are subject to revision as I look for "just the right" word/feel to make the Yule Season brighter for me (when I *have* to go in those stores playing those *other* carols re-written by christians way back when...). ;)

Return to TABLE OF CONTENTS *The Thirteen Days of Yuletide* (Return to table of contents) On the first day of Yuletide My true love gave to me: A partridge in a pear tree! Two turtle doves. Three French hens. Four calling birds. Five golden rings! Six geese a laying. Seven swans a swimming. Eight maids a milking. Nine ladies dancing. Ten lords a leaping. Eleven pipers piping. Twelve drummers drumming. Thirteen witches chanting! Return to TABLE OF CONTENTS *Christmas Time is Pagan* (tune: Angels we have Heard on High) (words by: unknown) Christmas time is here again, Decorations everywhere. Christmas carols ringing out, Gentle pagans, we don't care! CHORUS: Glorious! Christmas time is Pagan! Glorious! Christmas time is Pagan! Let them have their Christmas trees, Decked with red and green and blue. We rejoice at everyone, Christmas trees are Pagan, too! Bowls of bubbly Christmas cheer, Fill your cup and quench your thirst. They think the tradition's theirs, Wassail bowls were Pagan first! Modern folks all celebrate, What they learned in Sunday school. In December they don't know, They are celebrating Yule! Every door and window bears Wreaths of holly, wreaths of pine. Circles represent the sun; Every wreath is yours and mine. Christmas lights on christmas trees Candle flames burn higher and higher And we giggle joyfully As they light their Yuletide fire. There's a possibility That this song is yours and mine. 'Cause this tune was known to all Back in A.D. one-two-nine! Return to TABLE OF CONTENTS *Real Solstice* (tune: White Christmas) (words by: anonymous) I'm dreaming of a real Solstice Just like the Druids used to know. It would be so pleasing, To stand there freezing At Stonehenge in the snow... I'm dreaming of a real Solstice With no eclectic modern feel. If your blade is silver, not steel... Then may all your Solstices be real. Return to TABLE OF CONTENTS *I Saw the Witch* (note: sung to "I saw three ships") (words by: Robin NiDana) I saw the witch come sailing in On Solstice day, on Solstice day I saw the witch come sailing in On Solstice day in the morning And what was that witch carrying? She carried all that she could bring Some wassail for to bring us cheer And sweets to bring a sweet New Year An athame for to cut the air A broom to sweep out the stale Old heartaches for to let them go And songs to sing in new joy And that's what the witch did bring. The new sun for to welcome in. Return to TABLE OF CONTENTS *Mother Berta's Coming to Town* (sung to: Santa Claus is Coming to Town) (words by: the Greenwood Singers) CHORUS: You better watch out when winter comes nigh You better not doubt I'm telling you why Mother Berta's coming to town. She carries a sack made out of a skin She dumps the toys out and stuffs the kids in Mother Berta's coming to town. She rides on Master Skeggi A goat whose back is strong Her beard is grey and scraggly And her tail is ten feet long! CHORUS With six or eight horns a moustache or two Make a mistake She's coming for YOU! Mother Berta's coming to town. She knows with whom your sleeping She knows with whom you wake She knows each thought you're thinking, so don't THINK! For Goddess' sake! CHORUS So when the winds howl way up in the sky Listen as she and Skeggi pass by Mother Berta's coming Mother Berta's coming Mother Berta's coming, to town! Return to TABLE OF CONTENTS *Holly and Ivy*. (words by: Robin NiDana) The Holly and the Ivy Now both are full well grown. Of all the trees that are in the wood The Holly is renown. CHORUS: Oh, the rising of the sun And the running of the deer The playing of the merry harp And sweet singing in the bower. The Holly bears a blossom As white as lil-y flower And the turning year gives the reborn sun to light our sweet de-sire. CHORUS The Holly bears a berry as red as any blood And the turning year gives the reborn sun To warm us as we need. CHORUS The Holly bears a prickle as sharp as any thorn And the turning year gives the reborn sun to spur us when forlorn. CHORUS The Holly bears a bark As bitter as any gall And the turning year gives the reborn sun For to heal us when we fall. CHORUS The Holly and the Ivy Now both are full well grown. Of all the trees that are in the wood The Holly is renown. The Light the Sun hath bore, New life now re-tu-rn-ing To Earth for season's more.
